In an attempt to learn the LaTeX typesetting package, I have put together (and in some cases, mirrored) a number of LaTeX resources.
For an introduction to using the LaTeX utilities, here is an introduction written by Norman Matloff on how to write and view LaTeX files on Unix.
Here are some electronic tutorials and references:
Because LaTeX is a set of macros, there are a whole slew of LaTeX macro sites around the world.
As far as editing goes, a lot of people like vi. Here are the utilities that I prefer:
- XEmacs, the text editor AND kitchen sink
- LyX, a graphical WYSIWYM/WYSIWYG Unix TeX editor that has also been ported to Win32
Sometimes you just have to use a Win32 program to create graphics and charts. Never fear! Use the Adobe Generic Postscript printer driver. Once you install it, go to a software package's Print... option (NOT the control panel printer settings, because it's inexplicitly different!) and click on the "Advanced" button (Netscape works fine for this). Make sure you are on the "Advanced" tab, open the "Document Options" node, then the "Postscript Options" node, then set the "Postscript Output Option" to "Encapsulated Postscript". Now print your document as a .eps file and enjoy the fruits of the EPS questions in these handy FAQs:
